What Is the G1 Climax?

The NJPW G1 Climax is an annual round-robin tournament held each July-August in Japan. It is widely regarded as the most prestigious tournament in professional wrestling. Wrestlers are divided into two blocks (traditionally A and B), and every participant faces every other participant in their block in a single-fall match. Two points for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss. Block winners meet in the tournament final, with the winner earning a contract for an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match at the following year's Wrestle Kingdom at Tokyo Dome.

G1 Climax Scoring & Tiebreakers

When two wrestlers finish with the same number of points, the tiebreaker is the result of their direct match. If three or more wrestlers are tied, NJPW uses a three-way tiebreaker based on direct match records between the tied competitors. Understanding these tiebreaker rules is essential for predicting tournament outcomes in the final stretch.

Notable G1 Climax Winners

Hiroshi Tanahashi holds the record with six G1 Climax victories. Kazuchika Okada has four wins and is the most dominant G1 performer by points percentage in the modern era. Kota Ibushi won back-to-back G1s in 2019 and 2020, the only wrestler to accomplish that feat. Foreign winners include Kenny Omega (2016), Jon Moxley (2021), and Will Ospreay (2023 and 2024).
