About Acid Bath
Acid Bath was a New Orleans sludge metal band formed in 1991. The lineup consisted of Dax Riggs (vocals), Mike Sanchez (guitar), Sammy Duet (guitar), Audie Pitre (bass), and Jimmy Kyle (drums). They released two studio albums on Rotten Records: "When the Kite String Pops" in 1994 and "Paegan Terrorism Tactics" in 1996. The band dissolved in 1997 following the death of bassist Audie Pitre, who was killed in an automobile accident involving a drunk driver. No reunion or continuation of the band was announced for nearly three decades. Sammy Duet went on to form Goatwhore. Dax Riggs pursued a solo career and fronted Deadboy & the Elephantmen before releasing solo albums. Mike Sanchez joined Goatwhore as well.
The 2025 Reunion
Acid Bath announced their reunion in 2025 — the first performances under the Acid Bath name since 1997. The reunion came 28 years after the band's dissolution. The announcement generated significant attention in the sludge metal community, as the band had maintained a strict no-reunion stance for the entirety of that period. The 2026 European tour supporting Queens of the Stone Age and System of a Down marked the band's highest-profile shows ever by audience size.
The NOLA Sludge Metal Scene
Acid Bath emerged from the same New Orleans underground that produced Eyehategod, Crowbar, and Down. The NOLA sludge scene is characterized by a specific collision of Black Sabbath-descended doom, punk aggression, and a specifically Southern American decay aesthetic. Many musicians in the scene shared personnel — Sammy Duet and Mike Sanchez have appeared in multiple NOLA scene bands. The scene's connection to New Orleans geography, the city's cultural relationship with death and decline, and its specific weather-beaten isolation shaped the sound more than any single musical influence.
